Meet The Chef
Featuring IndigenousĀ Chef Alexa Numkena-Anderson
Chef Alexa Numkena-Anderson is the chef and co-owner of Javelina: Indigenous Dining, Portland's first Indigenous restaurant. Drawing on her Hopi, Yakama, Cree, and Skokomish heritage, she creates cuisine that honors Indigenous traditions while celebrating the ingredients, stories, and relationships that connect us to this place. Her passion for Indigenous food sovereignty and community makes her the perfect chef to lead Growing Gardens' 30th anniversary celebration.
Your Evening Experience
We're honored to feature Indigenous Chef Alexa Numkena-Anderson of Javelina, whose extraordinary three-course family-style dinner draws on her Hopi, Yakama, Cree, and Skokomish heritage while celebrating the ingredients, traditions, and stories rooted in this place.
Your evening begins with welcome bites from Chef TJ and a signature cocktail experience hosted by Sun Rice, followed by a vibrant mezze course from Palestinian chef Jawaher. End the night with locally roasted coffee from Portland Coffee Roasters and sweet treats by FOMO Rice, all featuring fresh, locally grown produce from Mr. Farms, owned by Growing Gardens Home Gardens alumna Maxi.
More than a dinner, Chef In Your Garden is a celebration of the people, partnerships, and shared commitment that have helped Growing Gardens cultivate healthier, more equitable communities for the past 30 years, and a toast to the next 30 years of growing together.
Meet the Farm Behind the Feast
One of the most meaningful ingredients in this year's dinner is the story behind it. Maxi, owner of Mr. Farms, first connected with Growing Gardens through our Home Gardens program. Today, she cultivates culturally nourishing produce, raises chickens and honeybees, and is helping feed her community as a local farmer, bringing her journey full circle from participant to partner.
